Help me,
Google Maps keeps running? Draining Battery.
I do not have a Task killer and don't want one?
I force close it and when I return it is running again.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

I am going to call BS to 'programs don't run while in the backgroud'
The Linux kernel is designed to run programs in the background.  Case in point:

The gray bar to the left shows how much CPU it us using when the snapshot was taken.
The program is using 25~30% of the CPU
The program is in the background.
The program is using 20.4M of memory.
The program has used 20s of CPU time.

I started the program, moved it into the background and took the snapshot.

No issue, just trying to get the facts straight.

If I understand you correctly, you are informing people that programs in the background don't use the battery to which I am saying this is not true.  Example #2, background music playback.   This program runs in the background playing music which does consume the battery.  Any program can run in the background and consume the battery.  It all depends on the application and has nothing to do with the OS.

Lazydog there us nothing you can do to stop android 2.2 from running the way its programmed to run. Your best bet is to turn off background data and use running services to close programs if need be. There is a thread dedicated to battery saving tips, I suggest reading it.

Khassy, I have recently noticed the same thing with Maps...I will look at what is using my battery, and Maps will be consuming 90 - 95% of what is using battery, with andriod system, cell standby, etc. all being in the 3%-5% range.  I read the link you provided...thank you.  So, am I to assume that there is nothing I can do, and that even though it the phone is showing maps using that much % of juice, the reality is that it is not draining the battery that significantly?

Thanks very much!   Smiley

Thanks for the information.  I will try these options.  I do back out properly, and I have gone in and manually force closed, but the next time I check, Maps is back up and running again, without me starting the app at all.   Huh?

Appreciate your time.

Hey, I think that did it.  I did what you suggested, and although Maps is still "running", the battery usage indicator is not showing maps at all as it was before.  Thx much for your advice.   Grin

I've noticed this happening also.  I was thinking that it might be a result of Latitude updating your position but running into trouble.  Is this a reasonable thought?

This is an ongoing situation experienced by a wide range of people for an extended period of time (beginning with earlier versions of Maps). I'm a relatively recent Thunderbolt owner, but did not have the "issue" until upgrading the Maps app to 5.0.0. Apparently the earlier 'bug' has popped up again in the 5.0.0 version. This is with Latitudes off.

The thing is, even though the battery usage shows 85, 90 or even 95%, when you go into the actual usage for that app, if the Maps app has not acually been used, the cpu usage will show zero seconds. In other words, system is reporting heavy battery usage by Maps, but the app is not actually running. Those whom have paid attention have reported no noticeable increased battery drain.

Seems to be a system reporting issue, not an actual battery issue.

But it is annoying having it at the top of the list of battery usage when no actual battery usage has taken place!
