Is there a way to show your current speed on the screen while navigating using Google maps or the Sprint navigator?

not from those apps... maybe there is another one that will measure mph based on how fast you get from point A to point B... I don't think it will be accurate enough to replace a broken speedometer.  Wink

Does anyone know if Sprint or Google plan on adding the current speed to the apps?

I hope so, that would be a nice update.  For now you can try Speed View.

http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-codesector-speedview-free-tptn.aspx

It has a compass, HUD mode, speed graph, odometer, maximum and average speed, time traveled, speed warning, etc....  I use it all the time and really like it.

Doesn't your vehicle have a speedometer?

maybe its for when he/she is in the back seat of a van and wants to tell the driver "Hey!, you're going XXX mph!"

HA! Actually it's because I plan on mounting it to my motorcycle and using the GPS when I am leading a ride. But the only way I can see being able to mount it is with a suction cup directly to the dash, which will cover the speedometer and tach. I don't need to see the tach but I would like to know how fast I am going. Having the speed on the screen similar to a Garmin or TomTom would be great.

Here is a pic of the dash, I might be able to mount it high enough to see the speedo (in the lower right corner). It will depend on whether the mount and phone cover it.

Edit: After looking into it, there isn't a way to import maps into the Google or Sprint navigation apps.  Angry  So much for that idea.

That won't work for my bike. No handlebars.  wink

Here's a better pic...

I was going to use a suction cup and mount it to the face of the dash, since it is flat. However, I think it might cover the speedometer which is why I wanted to see my speed on the GPS display. I hope Sprint and/or Google add that eventually.

The Sprint app does show the speed on the turn-by-turn view, but I prefer the map view.

I actually installed that app a few days ago to play with it.  Smiley

My problen isn't that I don't have a speedometer, it's that when I mount my phone to use the GPS it covers the speedometer on the dash. I just want Sprint or Google to add the speed to the GPS display, like the standard GPS devices have.

i use the cell phone mount that was linked into this thread. and i have copilot live 8 downloaded onto my sd card. it's a full fledged gps program without the need for internet. and it will display anything y ou want to put into the settings. i have it set for all display information. meaning=compass, altitude, speed, longitude, eta, all that jazz.

it's 2 gigs. so it has no choice but the sd card. it costs $30. and HAS to be downloaded through wifi. it won't use the internet.

here is my full setup.

i bought this dude off the internet for $12 dollars. NOT from new egg.  do a google search.

 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16875999462

then i bought this dude.
mine has a coiled plug. i clipped the alligator clips off and wired up the positive and negative wires. the cord is long enough i ran it under the gas tank and handlebars. i have a 12 volt cigarette socket in front of the handlebars.

then i bought this dude. it has 3 different leds in different spots. and has a switch to turn the plug off and on. i left the cord wrapped up as it came out of the package. leaving just enough to wrap around the handle bars. i now have 2 cigarette plugs and 2 usb plugs. with flashing led lights.

then i bought and downloaded this program.

http://www.alk.com/copilot/android/
also had to buy an extra usb cord to plug my phone into power supply.

WORKS PRETTY GOOD.

i'm working on some speakers now to use my phone as an mp3 player.

Thanks Snowwy. That is similar to what I was going to set up. I will look into CoPilot. It looks like it will let you set up routes to follow, where Sprint and Google do not let you do that.

if you see a usb adapter on the internet with a long enough cord. i would be game for hooking that up and losing the 12volt socket. i like the setup of 2 usb ports and 2 12 volt cigarette sockets. but the cord isn't long enough. i think it's 20 inches. so i routed the 12 volt cigarette plug under the tank. since it has a 4 foot cord.

i understand your setup will be a little harder to figure out since you don't have any handlebars. but there are cell phone mounts with suction cups for sale on the internet. even if you had to mount it to the gas tank. which you problly don't want to mess up the paint.

i'm trying to figure out how to use the windshield to hopefully have a cleaner looking installation. by the time i get the speakers and apparently a mini amp. there's going to be some wires floating around. AND, i'm thinking of some led's too underneath the bike.
