I checked out both and neither is what I am looking for. You can only use the basic Google map, you can not add layers or do anything else that Google Maps can do. Neither app works with Google or Sprint Navigation programs, only Google Maps.

Thanks, though.

I think I am going to have to buy GPS software that can do route planning, since neither Sprint nor Google do it. The speed issue is minor (I'm rarely doing the speed limit on the motorcycle anyway). I'm looking at Copilot 8 now, but I'm not sure if it can do route planning that I am looking for.

you program all your stops and copilot will plot the route for you. don't know what else you want.

Actually, I want to tell it what route I want to take, and have it tell me where to turn. Can Copilot do that? I know it can do a pre-planned route, but I thought I read somewhere that it was limited to the number of turns it can handle.

i don't think you can do what you want to do with gps. gps was designed to help you find your way. not for you to tell it how you want to go.

I will probably download it anyway and try it. If it doesn't work then I am only out $5 (for the USA version). I will also have the routes on my SD card so if I lose network I can still use CoPilot.

I have been playing with CoPilot for a couple weeks now. It looks like I can set up a route by picking points on the map. I have one route set up (for a motorcycle ride) but I haven't had a chance to test it out by using the actual GPS part yet. Maybe this weekend if the weather stays nice. I also set the display to show current speed. That is nice, and it is accurate, at least with the speedo in the truck.

For $5 it might be worth trying out. I do know some roads around here are not on the included maps yet, even though the roads are 5 or 6 years old. The main roads are all there. Hopefully they update the maps soon.

gps speed will always be accurate.

vehicle speedos are NEVER accurate. you can confirm with a speed trap sign or whatever sign used in your neck of the woods. you can also confirm your speedometer with the mile markers on the highway. you vehicle will say you've gone 1.05 - 1.10 miles for every mile you've traveled.

OR

you can try the free proram called *just gps*. it has speedo, AND mileage. along with other features. take your vehicle on a 10 mile trip using the gps program. i bet your vehicle says you've actually traveled over 11 miles whereas gps says you've only traveled 10 miles.

the govt don't like people speeding. it's always been a govt law for vehicle speedos to be faster then they should be. to keep people from going to fast.

today i downloaded the new navigon for android. just released and it was on sale. although not as cheap as copilot. and it defenitly don't have the features or settings that copilot has. the only thing i could see nice about it is the speed limit signs it displays. i read TONS of reviews about it being the best program out there becuase it has a very nice graphical interface. the only graphics i've seen so far is the sun in the sky on top of the screen.

one thing i like about sprint nav is the ability to search for business'es.

google nav, copilot, and navigon require address specifics.

copilot and navigon has the ability for multiple stops. sprint and google don't.

then we have google maps. all it can do is show location. find business'es and plot us there. but no voice.  but when i'm lost in the neighborhood. it's the fastest program to load up and show me my location.

one of these days someone will develop the allmighty perfect program that can do everything all 5 programs can do. and a few more features all on one screen.

Edit:

the govt don't like people speeding. it's always been a govt law for vehicle speedos to be faster then they should be. to keep people from going to fast.

Oliver Stone, is that you? Can you direct me to that law, please? I'd like to read it.

Actually, the government makes a good bit of money when people speed. Thus, speed traps, and accelerated numbers of tickets issued toward the end of the month. Gotta make them quotas.

that's the states and cities. the govt wants people to arrive ALIVE.

that's what was taught to me when i was in college for automotive. who am i to argue with the teacher.

it's a true fact though. you show me one car that actually has an accurate speedo. being a retired mechanic. i've never seen one that wasn't at least 3 miles faster in a 35 zone. 5 miles faster on the freeway.

programmed. that's a good one. LOL

try your own vehicle. the faster you go. the more off your speedo is.

Getting off topic, but speedometers are usually off a bit, based on speed. The faster you go the farther off it is. The manufacturers err on the side of safety and show the speed a bit higher than actual. A lot of things can affect the shown speed of the vehicle.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speedometer

That link also mentions the 'law' about how far off the speedometer is allowed to be. Up to 5% in the US.

Back on topic, it would be great to have GPS software that can do everything. I think we will eventually get there, it is going to take some time though. So far I am happy with CoPilot, although this past weekend I did find some roads that have not been updated. I opened a ticket with CoPilot for that. Hopefully it gets updated.

bringing an old thread back to life.

there was an article about navigon awhile back. it has some nicer graphics and added features that copilot don't thave.

put that on my phone. been using it more then copilot now.

can't wait for motorcycle season.

i can see the day when tomtom and garmin are no longer. phones can do the same job and the software is much much cheaper.
