For email notification changes you have to go to "Settings" > "Sound & display" > Notification Sound (Set your notification sound).
It will use the same sound for all your email accounts you have set up. (Gmail has it's own settings if you use that).
To use a custom sound, I added some .wav files in my SD card = media/audio/notifications

Doing this method will work, but if you want it more customized since doing this will change your default tone for mail and text, you can open your mail app and hit menu>more>settings and change it in there. This will allow your mail tone to be different than your text tone. The only "problem" I've had with the Thunderbolt is the limited functions for setting different sounds to different processes, but it can all be worked around, or can always "find an app for that!"

Wonder if anyone is still reading this thread, but I got my thunderbolt Yesturday. Its setup with corporate sync email for work. I do not use gmail with it. I'm trying to get my email notifications to be a different ring tone than SMS text message. Above it says do .."start mail app, menu>more>settings and change it in there." But for me, I can only turn sound on or off, not set a custom ringtone for email. Any sugestions? I'm using the default app that came with it for corporate sync. Does anyone know of a good app to set a custom ring tone for corporate sync email?

I looked at the FAQ, and searched the forums. Everyone says its been answered "a gazlillion" times before. In the one FAQ it says--
"Ok, first if you use the stock gmail app press menu, settings, select ringtone. If you use the standard mail app, press menu, settings, sound and display, notification ringtone, and select the ringtone you want. Next, open the messaging app and if you use the stock one, press menu, settings. Under ..... "
I'm using the standard mail app, using corporate sync, on Driod v2.2. And I'm telling you, that option is not there. I press Mail icon, I press menu -> More -> Settings. There is NO "Sound and Display". Only "Account Settings,General Settings, Send and Receive, Notification Settings, and delete Account" If I go into notification Settings, there is only "Email Notifications Y/N, Notification Sound Y/N, and Notification Vibrate Y/N" Thats it, nothing there or anywhere else to set a ringtone for email. Everything is Yes/No. I looked under all other headings, no luck.
What everone is saying, I'm not seeing... Is it different in v2.2? I'm just getting fustrated now... arrggg..

Correct, If I go into the GMail app, YES I can change the ringtone, but I don't use gmail, I use Exchange Active Sync, using the default android mail app (not gmail app). And under that, TRUST ME, there is nothing there that allows you to change the ringtone. (I'm SOL on this one)
So that being said, let me ask another question. Can anyone suggest a good Free or less than $10 GOOD MS Exchange Sync App?
Thanks.

oh ok, I see what you are saying. If I read it correctly, I need to change the 'default' notification sound in the main phone settings menu. That will be used for Exchange email. Then, go in to Text Message or another app, and set the Custom Ringtone there for text message. This way, email is using the phone default notification sound, and text message and other apps (like DroidSIP, which I LOVE) use custom rintones that I set for that particular app. Hence, now I got spearate tones for text/email....

Does anyone know how to delete or turn off the default notification? because no matter what i set my text/email notification to, it always plays the default notification i want to have the MGS alert sound for texts and Star Trek's "Captain, incoming message" for emails.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for but if you push the button (personalize) on the right side of the dock(right side of the phone call button) & scroll to the bottom you get the personalize sound menu.
You can change all the defaults here to whatever you want. Press on the Notification Sound section and it will give options to change, email, text (message), calendar & default notification

I've doe that, but whenever I get an email or text it plays the default noise. I've set the text and email separately from the default notification tone but it still plays the default one.

Yes, It is very easy to set a ringtone for email. You can set it from Setting menu and Sound profile. Select Email tone and then that tone which you want to select.
