Use the stock music player to play a song/sound and hit menu-more-set as ringtone, then open your messaging app, go to notification settings and pick the ringtone you made.

Another way and real easy is, download Zedge (ringtones & wallpaper app) from the market & install. Now on your sd card under zedge there should be a folder called ringtones, put your rigtones in there and they will automatically show up in your phones ringtone directory

Nowadays many short tunes are available for Text alerts. I have many tunes that I set as a Message tone. They are like tone of Small Baby, angry bird and many other funny sounds as a tone.
