This started from another thread but I guess I was about to hijack it so I just created a new thread here.

I love root but I understand your concerns about bricking. I never push rooting but I have to say that once a phone is rooted, besides removing apps, there is a whole new world to explore and do with the phone. You can do things that are not possible with stock...

My advice to new rooters, read, read, read and take your time. Its really not that hard but baby steps are best..

I have found 100 different articles on rooting but they all say essentially the same thing "here are 5 reasons to root" but none of those 5 reasons are compelling. If so many people are all hyped up about it there has to be more than tethering and removing bloatware, right? Also I've searched for root only apps thinking that there might be some magical app I can't live without but the only things I ever really find are Titanium backup and Rom Manager.

I feel like I understand everything I've read about rooting but I'm not actually "getting it". Make sense? Kind of like someone told a joke and everyone is laughing and I'm sitting there thinking "I guess I should smile but I don't know why".

Rooting is a personal choice. I personally do it to unlock the full potential of the phone. With root you can access the deepest depths of your phone. I also want teathering and bloatware freezing. Custom ROMs are also a major reason for me.

You by no means need to root. There is no need to do it if you don't want. It's more of a geeky thing sometimes.

If you search for "root" in the market you'll find many apps that require it.

I appreciate your answer, JPC, it's the same kind of thing I find all over the place but doesn't really help me make a decision. What I want are specifics. I guess what I'm asking is what is the "full potential" of the phone or why would I need access to the "deepest depths" of my phone.

I almost think your sentence "It's more of a geeky thing sometimes" maybe sums it up the best. Seems more like people just want to be part of the root in crowd. Much like the Linux crowd who have to install it on their home machines. I get it Linux users, you are vastly superior to us mere Windows users. Except I don't get that superiority vibe from rooters so there has got to be a more legit reason to root.

Even the couple of friends I have who have rooted their phones don't ever say "I wanted to be able to do 'x' which you can't do without root". But then I'm a computer geek by trade and almost all of my friends are too so they mostly do this stuff just because they like futzing around with that kind of stuff. Which is a fine reason it's just a reason for me to do it.

Though saying you like custom ROMs is more specific so I appreciate that. I haven't actually looked into ROMs much yet (just some cursory reading about Cyogenmod) because that seems a little cart-before-the-horse.

I've searched the market for root apps before but there isn't anything that jumps out at me.

Thanks, JPC! If you have any other input I'd be happy to hear it.

Some quick things about root are:

1) customs roms - Basicaly the devs get updates and new operating system files before the general public does due to leaks from people from within so you get the newest o/s for the phone weeks to months before non rooters.

2) when a phone is EOL & has no more support from the companies, devs can keep the phone current with their own stuf, roms, apps and so fourth

3) if an app come out thats not compatible for the phone, devs can rewrite it and get it to work (most of time)

4) gettings into the depths of the phone, gives you options for different radios (for better gps, signal, calling and so fourth)

5) kernals (which give you better battery consumption & other benfits)

6) Overclocking, is here you can take the stock speed & possibly double to triple it. For example, Tbolt is 1ghz, with overclocking it can go up to 1.7ghz & with a good kernal have minimal affect on battery.

7) remove all the bloatware (junk apps) that are put in by verizon and such

Cool my biggest thing wired & wireless tether, to give me & other internet wherever I am & at anytime without the extra charge or a plan needed.

Hope this helps

Thanks. The bullet points are great. The overclocking sounds cool. I'd assumed that this would aversely effect the battery so I never even looked into it. Most of things I'm interested in are more form than function so you can't really justify it, however, the radio thing is interesting and something I might research as well.

You and JPC are super helpful. Thanks to both of you.

If you're looking fore more form than function, then look deeper into the custom ROMs. They are what the devs want them to be. They can change system fonts, system colors, system sounds, system lockscreens, apps, app icons etc. Basically they can make everything different. You can almost certainly find one that fits your style.

Actually I meant to say I was looking for function based reasons to root because I didn't feel like making my phone prettier was worth the possible risk of bricking. That said, I do enjoy making things look pretty. I spend a crazy amount of time customizing and tweaking my PC and then when it's all done I end up finding reasons to wipe the whole thing so I can do it again.

I've had really good luck with launchers and sounds. I had a lock screen I liked but it seemed to make my phone flaky so I ditched it (though that was around the time of the infamous update so it could have been coincidental.

That ad-blocker is one I haven't heard of. That'll be one of my first apps when I get around to rooting.

Lockscreen replacements never seem to be all that great (to me anyway). As far as functionality, look at that link.

If you've read all the how to's you should be ready to root your phone. I was a fence sitter for about three months after I first read about rooting. I finally rooted my TB last week and I am enjoying the advantages ( not all of them yet), but you can unroot your phone if you don't enjoy the advantages you've only read about so far.

Yeah, I've read a bunch of stuff. I still just don't see the huge advantage.

Wow....I'm sold more then ever on rooting. I've noticed in the rooting community they find answers for lagging software issues that HTC has yet to correct. I enjoy the ability to do what I want with what I pay for.  the extended battery life and all the enhancemant to the original software is a plus. Wink
